Strengthening Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Climate Ambition Through Science-Based Targets Setting & Validation

APP Group, one of the world’s largest pulp and paper producers and a subsidiary of a leading Indonesian conglomerate, needed to align with the most ambitious climate targets under the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The challenge included ensuring compliance across both forestry and mill operations, covering complex FLAG and non-FLAG activities.

Solution

Bestari supported APP Group by conducting boundary mapping assessments across six forest management units and fourteen mill facilities, completing a GHG emissions inventory in accordance with the GHG Protocol, and developing target-setting scenarios for both FLAG and non-FLAG sectors to ensure robust and science-based commitments.

Result

On 11 December 2024, SBTi approved APP Group’s non-FLAG near-term target validation. The company is on track to demonstrate its leadership in climate action and sustainable practices, positioning itself as one of Indonesia’s most ambitious companies in pursuing net zero.
